Writers’ Club unleashes creativity with local horror author

Writers’ Club gathered after school for an inspiring creative writing workshop hosted by Rosmini Old Boy and author Shane M. Drought

On Thursday 22 October, Rosmini College’s Writers’ Club gathered after school for an inspiring creative writing workshop hosted by Shane M. Drought, Rosmini College Old Boy from 2004, author of the youth horror series Tales You Can't Unread and former Digital Content Manager for the Warriors.

Students enjoyed afternoon tea before diving into engaging, prompt-driven writing exercises. A standout activity was the "100 Word Crunch," where students penned micro-stories to discover the impact every single word carries on the page.

During an insightful Q&A, Drought shared candid advice on navigating the YA horror genre, drawing inspiration from life, and building characters. Reflecting on his own creative process, he encouraged aspiring authors to store story ideas immediately on their phones, work across multiple projects to beat writer's block, and hold firm on deadlines to preserve story quality. His core takeaway for student writers was simple yet powerful: "just write," embrace the process, and "edit that bad boy" later.

The session left Rosmini’s young writers motivated, refreshed, and equipped with practical tools to elevate their storytelling. Thank you to Boyd Archibald for organising the event. We are grateful this continues the momentum from other authors’ workshops we have hosted this year and look forward to more opportunities in 2027.
