What began as a simple idea has now become a meaningful weekly gathering for our Filipino students at Rosmini College
Social Merienda was established to help Filipino students connect with, celebrate, and preserve their Filipino identity while living here in New Zealand. Through interactive games, language, food, and shared experiences, students have the opportunity to learn more about their heritage and build friendships in a welcoming environment.
Every Tuesday at lunchtime in R5, students come together to play traditional Filipino games, learn Filipino words and phrases, explore cultural traditions, and, of course, enjoy merienda together.
The success of Social Merienda would not be possible without the leadership of our senior students—Szymon, Dylan, and Aaron. They enthusiastically lead the activities each week, creating an enjoyable and inclusive atmosphere for everyone. While Social Merienda was initially created for Filipino students, it is open to all Rosmini students who are interested in learning about Filipino culture.
What started with fewer than 10 students has now grown to around 20 regular participants. Each week, our senior student leaders prepare engaging games and cultural activities that keep students excited to participate while learning more about Filipino traditions and heritage. Interactive activities help students rediscover Filipino foods, places, language, and traditions in a fun and engaging way. They are also introduced to the uniquely Filipino culture of gathering with family, friends, and neighbours to watch major sporting events or pageants together in a tradition that reflects the strong sense of community and togetherness that is central to Filipino life. At Rosmini, the FIFA World Cup became the perfect opportunity to experience this spirit of camaraderie. One of the highlights each week is playing the traditional Filipino game Sipa, which has quickly become a favourite among the boys.
Social Merienda reminds our students that no matter where they are in the world, their culture remains an important part of who they are and something worth celebrating and sharing with others.
