Students began the project to convert a small red aircraft, the Pelican, to electric power
A group of keen One Foot In The Clouds students spent the weekend at Mercer Airfield, starting the project to convert a small red aircraft, the Pelican, to electric power.
Most of the weekend was spent cleaning the airframe and removing components that are redundant under the new electric powertrain system.
Alongside the physical work, students completed a feasibility study to assess the project's viability. The calculations show the total conversion will cost approximately $12,000, which includes the complete charging package. Once complete, this modification will reduce the aircraft's ongoing operational energy costs to zero.
With the feasibility study confirming the project's viability, we are now commencing the formal certification process with the CAA.
Thank you Mr Smith for organising another fantastic hands-on learning opportunity for our students.
