Students have been busy with the Advent Angels stationery drive and Christmas cards for Starship hospital
The Art Department has been busy the past few weeks creating Christmas cheer for children at Starship hospital. Art Club students spent their lunchtimes making festive cards for patients, while Miss Rudden rallied students and staff to donate an impressive amount of stationery supplies. Student Aiden Lim tells us more...
"Over the past couple weeks, students in the Art Club have been creating Christmas cards for young patients at Starship Hospital. An activity that had also become more meaningful than a simple art project. Designing these cards has also allowed us to send a small message to a young child and show a glimpse of joy or hope into someone we’ve never met before. Knowing that our creativity and thoughts could’ve brought a smile to those who really needed their spirits lifted had really highlighted our efforts.
Participating in this project has also extended our understanding of how compassion is shown in many different ways and levels. In today’s society, most people tend to emphasise dramatic gestures of support, but our own experience has demonstrated that small and different acts of kindness could also be equally impactful to those in need. For children spending the holidays in a hospital environment, a small and simple card could disconnect the discomfort with a small sense of connection. Through this, we had learned that kindness does not depend on the scale, rather the value that lies in the intention of the item.
Overall, taking part of this group has allowed us to show our compassion and empathy towards the community and those who need it the most. Knowing that some things we had made ourselves could bring comfort or some festive joy to a child at Starship, had shown us that meaningful change can often begin with small, thoughtful actions and contributions. This experience not only strengthened our awareness of others, but also showed how our compassion can have a long lasting impact on those in our community."
