Old Boys triumph in fierce Water Polo showdown

While the final score may suggest a one-sided affair in favour of the Old Boys, the story of the game was far more complex and filled with intense action

Rosmini’s water polo community was treated to a spectacle on Sunday afternoon as the Premier team of young, talented players faced off against a formidable Old Boys team, full of former Prefects, Head and Deputy Boys, in a match that will be talked about for years to come. While the final score of 12-6 may suggest a one-sided affair in favour of the Old Boys, the story of the game was far more complex and filled with intense action. Even though the younger boys on the table duty tried to provide extra time to the Premier players and a couple of extra shots, it did not go unnoticed by the veteran players. Their eye sight is not quite failing them yet!

From the first whistle, it was clear this was not a typical friendly match. The young Premier team, known for their speed and agility, came out strong, but they were met with a level of physicality that only years of experience can bring. The Old Boys, perhaps making up for a slight lack of pace, relied on their seasoned tactics and underwater play.

Reports from the pool painted a picture of a relentless battle. The referee had his hands full, but much of the action went unseen. There were accusations of underwater tussles, and a few players from the Premier team were seen adjusting their togs after particularly close encounters. The Old Boys' captain and former Head Boy Robbie Tindall, a grizzled veteran of many campaigns, simply smiled when asked about the tactics, stating, "Water polo is a tough sport. You do what you have to do to win."

Despite the alleged dirty play, the young Premier team fought with incredible heart and sportsmanship. They never gave up, showcasing their fantastic passing game and powerful shots. Goalie Ed Wescott came out of the cage to play in the field, scoring several shots allowing Thomas Markovina to step into the breach, saving many goals against the old rivals. However, the experience of the Old Boys proved to be the decisive factor. Their ability to capitalize on every mistake and their clinical finishing under pressure saw them pull ahead in the later stages of the game. The younger Old Boys who still play for the North Harbour U21 & Men’s teams were just too strong this year.

The final whistle confirmed the Old Boys' victory with a 12-6 scoreline. While the Premier team was disappointed with the result, they gained invaluable experience against some of the toughest opponents they will ever face. It also proved that, even with a few grey hairs and a slower pace, the Old Boys still have what it takes to dominate the pool, especially with the likes of Matt Payne, Robbie Tindall , Mark Delaney and Brett ‘The Hitman’ Hammond taking to the water.

The after match function allowed Mrs Peak (TIC) and supporters to farewell our Year 13 players; George Lendich, Oliver Sahinkaya, Alex Rutkiewicz and Luc Sangster, giving them their leaver’s cap and congratulating them for their resilience in the pool over the seven years playing for Rosmini Water Polo. They are fantastic leaders in and out of the pool and have given back in so many ways. We wish them well for their exciting futures ahead.

We look forward to 2026 as the trophy is now 4-3 in favour of the Old Boy’s team.
