Envirogroup visits Tiritiri Matangi Island

Envirogroup visits Tiritiri Matangi Island

On a very sunny Friday 11 August Rosmini Envirogroup and Year 13 Biology students cruised from the Auckland Viaduct to Tiritiri Matangi Island. We were put into groups at the wharf and headed off around the island with experienced and very knowledgeable guides.

Delightfully, our guide was Lyn from Smith’s Bush Reserve, who we had planted trees with earlier this year. Lyn told us so many interesting facts about the island, including how it had been converted from pure farmland to the wonderful nature reserve that offers sanctuary to so many threatened species. The boys were so excited to see the beautiful rare birds in such great numbers flying so close to them.

Reaching the lighthouse for lunch, the seniors listened to a talk on Open Sanctuaries, whilst Envirogroup completed a fun scavenger hunt. We then headed down to the beach to see the habitat under strong magnifying lenses, which was eye opening. Simon Tagg found a seal jaw bone which he was allowed to keep as it was in the water.

As the boys left the island we sang our Rosmini School song and said sincere 'thank yous' to the volunteers for a stunning and incredibly educational day.
