Students explore science behind Hāngī
A group of Food Technology and Earth & Space Science students recently joined forces to learn about and prepare a traditional Māori Hāngī as part of their internal assessment.
The Hāngī experience was not just a lesson in science and culture, but also a lesson in teamwork and collaboration. Students worked together to prepare the Hāngī, digging the pit, layering the food, and covering it with earth to cook. It was a hands-on learning experience that allowed them to see the fruits of their labor and appreciate the effort that goes into traditional Maori cooking, while learning about the principles of heat transfer.
Of course, the highlight of the day was tasting the food, and there were many requests for second helpings!
