Tiritiri Matangi Island trip
On the last day of Term 3 Rosmini Envirogroup and L3 Biology visited Tiritiri Matangi Island with Mr Cooper and Mrs Cooper, who is a guide there, as well as Mrs Snowsill and Mr Pygott.
The weather forecast was a little concerning, but as it had already been cancelled a few weeks before because of a storm we were all very excited to actually be going.
We took a coach to Gulf Harbour, where we boarded the ferry. The boys were fascinated by the sea life already in the harbour as we queued.
The ferry journey was quick and we soon were divided into groups for tours around the island. Our guide was fascinating, teaching us about the history of the island as well as the many struggles to restore the island and conserve some of NZ’s endemic flora and fauna.
Some highlights included seeing penguins in nesting boxes with their chicks and hearing and seeing all the beautiful bird life. We quite forgot how wet we had become on our travels.
The boys were very interested in all they were told and took some amazing photos.
After a very informative talk about the evolution of New Zealand animals we took our time to return to the ferry.
This trip was very special for Year 13 Envirogroup as it was their last, and due to Covid, we have not been able to go before this year. I would personally like to thank them for their efforts over the last few years improving not only Rosmini’s Environment, but that of the local area. They will be missed.
