Rosmini College Year 13 Prefect, Hussam Gabrial (18) of Glenfield has won a Transpower Neighbourhood Engineers Award. The Neighbourhood Engineers Awards have been sponsored by Transpower since 2003 and the Awards are open to all the primary, intermediate and secondary schools in New Zealand. The aim of the Awards is to create a greater awareness of the engineering profession and encourage innovative thinking in the areas of engineering and technology. Hussam’s winning project was a temperature controlled window opener. He said he came up with this idea “while sleeping” and he adds, “Lots of time was spent after school, on weekends and during the holidays to produce this challenging piece of work.” Hussam goes on, “I am looking at filing for a patent on the design and getting in touch with some investors or companies to attempt to develop and market this as a product.” Hussam has won $2000 and the Robert Ned Covich Scholarship which is worth $2500 every year for the next three years. He says he would like to thank Rosmini College’s Head of Technology, Mr. Alexander Breig, Rod Hare, Spencer Travers, Luke Fowler and his family for making this outcome possible. He adds, “I would also like to advise the younger Rosmini students to use the resources supplied by the school. They are there for a reason. Opportunities only show themselves but do not come to you, you go to them.” Hussam is hoping to study mechatronics engineering at the University Of Auckland.
